Answer:
Chevy Cobalt. American Cars are cheaper and just as good as anything else you can get. I'm personally very worried about the current economic chrisis and 1 in 10 jobs depends on the American Auto Industry. Did you know that GM, Ford and Chrysler employ more Americans than all 16 foreign automakers combined? http://www.jobspercar.com Check out how what YOU drive, Drives America. Even if you're buying used, a car is a moving advertizement for itself. =D You're not saying what your price range is, but the Chevy Malibu is a more family-oriented vehicle, but it's significantly more expensive than the Cobalt. In the Cobalt's size range, you'll also find the Ford Focus, which is a really hardy little car. It's not as good-looking or as fast as the Cobalt, but it's still good. The Ford Crown Victoria runs forever. The same size range as the Malibu, you find the Chrysler 300 and the Ford Taurus. I thank you, in advance, for buying American. =D I want there to be jobs out there when my sister's kids grow up. =D

Sounds like you are looking for an impossible deal. Dealers can go to dealer auction and get wholesale or near wholesale bids on all their cars. They have no incentive to sell one to the public except at a premium to what it would bring wholesale. That said, all dealers want to sell cars. And all dealers will make deals to sell a car. They all pay the same thing for their new cars and roughly the same thing for their used cars. The way to get a good deal is to know values and make offers. Be ready to buy, Not ready to "sleep on it". You will never get their best deal and then be allowed to go home and "think it over".
With the $4,500.00 green car tax credit why not buy new? Unless of course you don't qualify...but who doesn't? Then try the power of the internet. Decide on the vehicle you want and the accessories and then contact 5 dealers by internet and ask them to bid on the car sale. Make sure you are specific about what you want...model, color, trans, engine, options, et cetra....be very specific. (Chrome System's PC carbook Plus has detailed manufacturer data on options, standard and optional equipment choices, with automated pricing and ordering rules. Shows you every possible option configuration, insures orderability. Turns you into an instant expert on any new vehicle.) http://www.chrome.com/Chrome/index.do?task=product&subtask=applications.pccarbookplus&area=Product Ask your credit union if they have it or just ask around and see who has a copy to help you with ordering configurations. Tell them you have selected 5 dealerships with in a 500 mile radius, (even though they are the 5 closest that you contact) so that they have a hard time trying to guess who they might be competing against. Tell them that you will only take one bid and that they need to make their price the best they can possibly do. Cash deal only. No trades, No Financing, No Dealer Prep, No Licensing, No handling costs. (This state has no sales tax or property tax on a car so I don't worry about that...you may.) Then the winning dealer gets the nod...or if you think they have all just given a full retail price you can decline all offers. Try it. The great thing is you eliminate the sales crap at the dealer and you might just get a new car at a used (2 or 3 year old) car price with a full warrenty! Bought my last car over the internet!

You definition of deal is vague. Do you want a car for less tahn dealer cost? Do you know the cost? A one or two year old used car with less tahn 20K miles is your best bet. I've been watching Lexus ES 350 (not 330) as well as the Toyota Avalon prices. They're wholesale price is 25K -ish but act fast when a good one pops.
