Are you sometimes afraid of death?

  • I'm an Atheist and I have to admit I'm sometimes afraid of death, this mostly happens when I'm thinking of death. the other day I watched a video where a fashion designer died on a fashion show while someone was filming the show, and I was thinking to myself "damn you can die at anytime without even expecting it" I'm not sure what's worse, expecting death or just die randomly I assume the first one is worse, can you imagine knowing that you will die within a few weeks or maybe months? just think for a second how horrible this would be random death depends on the circumstances though, for example, have you fullfilled all your dreams, have you achieved your goals? have you done your job while alive? are you ready to go? are you old? these are the most important factors for me in random death if for example I'm old and have achieved all my goals, then it's the best way to die like that... but again the thought of non existence terrifies me a bit but then again, who asks me if it terrifies me or not? I'm just going to die anyway right? I'm trying to "remember" how it was before I was born, it was like nothing, I didn't exist, I felt nothing so I assume the same will be when I die I would like to hear your opinion on this matter thanks

  • Answer:

It's your ego that's afraid. And you are NOT your ego. Your ego exists only for your survival...even at the cost of your happiness and your soul. And the ego keeps giving you bad advice. And it's the ego that fears total annihilation, not YOU! You see? OTOH, your imagination has you...instead of you having your imagination. Think about that. I used to fear death terribly. But somehow I knew fearing it wasn't right. So I investigated the fear. Later, I overheard the Zen adage, "If you're afraid to die, you're afraid to live." Wow! So tell your ego to SHUT UP when the fear arises. It works if you keep practicing. So lighten up. Donny (Life Coach)

The word "atheist" is from the Greek word "theos," which is often translated "god," but is closer to "higher power" because the ancient Greeks could use it for a man in a very high position. The word for one who doesn't believe that spirits can live without bodies is "materialist." Science has no creed. Scientific journals are not concerned with metaphysics. Even so, there are scientists with solid reputations who take the idea of afterlife seriously based on NDE studies. In fact, a study that raises this question was published in Lancet, one of the world's most influential medical journals (Van Lommel, 2001). Of all the single-subject case histories, the most interesting one is that of Pam Reynolds. http://iands.org/research/important-research-articles/43-dr-pim-van-lommel-md-continuity-of-consciousness.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNbdUEqDB-k
