Is participation in "free" market economy compulsory?
-
In other words, if I dont want to be a slave to this system of give & take, can I opt out of it? Americans are supposed to be free, but I have yet to find a definition of what we ARE free to do (aside from the bill of rights / constitution, which says little about our economy, culture, behavior, etc) So if anyone can point me towards a list (as opposed to say, canada or austrailia, or switzerland, for example), that'd be much appreciated! I just want some land to build a log cabin on, a garden & freedom to hunt animals (I try to only eat primitively anyways, its much healthier than mc donalds ;), and time freedom - the 63 or so years I have left to live... to live in peace, without regards to paying for gas, food, insurance, mortgage, phone (I have a mouth & ear, so I can talk in person if need be!), and trading 60,000+ hours of my life for these things

Generally, living in a country means you agree to obey its laws. There is no list of what you can do, just a list of what you can't do, and everything else is allowed. Which is a lot more freedom than a list of things you can do, with everything else not allowed. And the reason you can't do something is that it affects safety or freedom of other people. You can certainly build your cabin and live off the land - plenty of empty land in Montana and Dakotas. You will have to buy the land though, and pay for tools you use to make the cabin. B/c somebody put hours of their life into making them. You will also have to pay property taxes though. This is the price for living in a safe and civil society. If you do not want to pay taxes, move to Somalia or Afghanistan. You can be truly free there (as long as you have enough firepower to protect yourself). Or you can join an Amish community in PA or OH - they live in log cabins, farm the land, share most things, and only trade for the few tools they can't make.

Sure. Try living with the Inuit in northern Alaska. There is lots of land where if you put up a shack, cabin, or igloo no one will care of bother you. Get the right licenses and you can hunt seals, walrus, and caribou. However, most people don't find that a terribly comfortable lifestyle and can't handle the diet, lack of medical facilities, climate, isolation, hard work, limited choices in having family, etc. and of course the twenty to thirty year reduction in life expectancy. A few places is Washington State and a few others might allow you to buy land fairly inexpensively and you can camp for much of the year. However, there are no places left in the lower states in which one can obtain enough hunting licenses to survive -- with 300+ million Americans there simply isn't enough wildlife left for large scale hunting. You can certainly purchase a small farm or ranch and grow or raise your own food. You can then 'trade' small amounts with neighbours for food. There are various Amish communities which operate mainly without money. Of course the average person wouldn't last two weeks without civilization. Most people don't like being cold, hungry, poor diets, living in the dark, seeing their children die of simple diseases or infections, etc. If you are serious, I would book a two or three week camping expedition in Alaska or Washington state or try working on a remote farm for a few weeks to see if you still like it.
