How to use a guitar tuner?

HOW DO I USE MY 12-NOTE GUITAR TUNER?

  • this is my first time playing a guitar so Im not exactly sure how to tune it. I got the korg TM-40 tuner and it has 12 notes (C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#...). I dont understand what these notes mean. Isnt it supposed to be show either an E, A, D, G, B, or e? So if im playing the A string, and my 12 note tuner shows a C, does it mean its too flat or too sharp?

  • Answer:

There are 12 notes in the chromatic scale so your tuner is just fine. It can be used for alternate tunings as well as standard tuning. >> Isnt it supposed to be show either an E, A, D, G, B, or e?<< No - it's supposed to show whatever pitch the string is actually at. >>So if im playing the A string, and my 12 note tuner shows a C, does it mean its too flat or too sharp?<< Impossible to tell without knowing if the string is above or below proper pitch. There are about 6 million youtube videos designed to show you how to tune your guitar. Better yet, ask your guitar teacher to explain it to you.

This is known as a CHROMATIC guitar tuner. Many of these tuners also have a guitar mode which makes it a bit easier to use when tuning guitars. All tuners come with a some way of showing weather a note is sharp (too high) or flat (too low) Some use a series of L.E.D. lights on either side of a single main L.E.D. that indicates when you are in tune. If you strike a note and the tuner registers a certain note, be sure to check the indicators to see if the note played is flat or sharp compared to the note in question. So if you strike the A string and your tuner says C then check the meter/L.E.D.s to see if you are sharp or flat compared to the note in question. (most likely you are sharp) Read the instructions thoroughly to be sure you understand how to use the tuner correctly.
