How to play higher notes on a trumpet?
-
I started to play trumpet a couple weeks ago and I need to learn how to play G, A, B, C on the staff to play music for the band. I want to play them without me having to blast on the trumpet or pushing the mouthpiece hard against my mouth which eventually hurts my lips and teeth, I would like to play them with ease as other people do. I played clarinet before so I have musical experience. I crack as well when having to go to those higher notes. All apart of the Bb flat major scale. Any tips on how to do get to those notes?

No offense, but that other poster is an idiot. Lemon on your lips? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. If you want to play higher its simple. Faster air = higher notes. Your lips are like the reed on your clarinet. The faster you can get them to vibrate the higher your pitch will go. Keep the corners of your lips firm and let the fleshy part in-between vibrate freely. (this is called your embouchure) Do lots of lip slurs (with the notes you can play) and lots of long tones. It takes a little while to get used to the trumpet and you have to play everyday to get your lip strength up. PS- The scale you mentioned is the C scale or (Bb CONCERT) scale just like your clarinet. CDEFGABC- Bb major actually has two flats in it. Bb CD Eb FGA Bb

im a trumpet player, and ive been playin for 3 yrs, now. Sorry to say, but there is no way to learn to play higher notes on the trumpet. It takes a lot of practice. Your lips need to get the hang of it, especially since u just started. Try this tho(mite sound weird, but it helped me). After you practice, just put lemon around ur lips. It mite sting a little, but this helps ur lips get used to the pain and ur lips will soon begin to form faster

I'm a Freshman in High School this year, and a good trumpet player so I can give you some advice. If you're a beginner, long tones are the way to go. Yes I know, everyone says "Long tones are the best", but trust me if you're a beginner use long tones, but keep the corners of your chops firm. This will develop the muscles needed later to play high. If you're not a beginner, then first, you need to think that high notes on the trumpet come from a "high pressure air tank". The key to high notes is EXTREMELY fast air stream, I mean fast. ALWAYS remember that the key to playing high notes or in the upper register is using fast air, NOT more air. **** Remember that sound from a trumpet is made from vibrations from the lips, a.k.a "chops". When you press the trumpet too close to the lips, there is MUCH less vibration, which will greatly prevent you from playing high notes. So here's a quick breakdown to help you play high notes on the trumpet: (1) FAST air, NOT more air. (2) Don't press the trumpet so close to your lips that they hurt, they WILL feel tired, but they should NOT hurt. (3) Practice lip slurs and long tones and keep the corners tight. Practice will give you the notes. The trumpet will give you the notes, but you need to practice them as well. High notes will never be "comfortable" for anyone. Hope this helps! and go trumpets!
