What should I expect in a high school audition?

University Audition Help?

  • I'm going to university this fall, and as part of my program, I need to be in concert band. However, it requires an audition, and I've never auditioned for music before in my life. I have no idea what to expect and I've really nervous. My high school band played at a B500 level, and I was first chair clarinet, but I have no idea what level that equals in RCM. My friend (who is amazing at clarinet) suggested I do Brahms Sonata no. 2, or Weber's Concertino, but I don't know if I can play those. Do you have any suggestions for an audition piece? I only need one, but I have no idea where to start looking. Also, should I prepare the whole piece, or just a section? How long is the average audition? Please help!

  • Answer:

I would say Solo De Concours by Messager or one of Francis Poulencs sonatas. They are both very difficult and flashy. Listen to both of them to see which one you like better and is in your skill range. Do whatever one you want ot all boils down to personal opinion. I myself am working on the Weber Concertino and I've only been playing for five months though people consider me a prodigy. Good luck with your audition!

Get together with your high school band teacher and ask for advice. Your H.S. teacher knows you and what you would do well on. Also spend time everyday doing sight reading. Auditions are usually just to place you in the group. You may be moved later on.
