Answer:
You mean an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar? Are you looking to record, or play live? If electric, the Shure SM57 is THE go-to mic for recording a guitar amp (both live and in the studio). For acoustics, I like using a matched stereo pair of condensers. I'm spoiled though, and am rather partial to the Earthworks QTC40's. Any stereo pair will do though. For live performances I usually use an SM57. It's probably not the best choice, but they always have lots of them around.

If you are gonna use it just to put in front of your guitar then anything will do. However, if you are looking to mic your guitar to increase the volume the Shure SM57 is the inexpensive, versatile workhorse of the mic family. http://www.shure.com/americas/products/microphones/sm/sm57-instrument-microphone

RADIO SHACK has some great, SMALL dynamic mics that work well. Don't use a condenser mic because you have to put batteries in them.. just a small $30 or less dynamic mic works very well.. just wrap it in some insulation or foam or bubble wrap to keep it from touching the sides of the guitar.
