What to wear to my jazz song performance?

What to wear to my jazz song performance..?2?

  • I'm singing Frank Sinatra's 'You'll Always be the One I Love' tomorrow night in a musical showcase. The arrangement we've done is that the intro and first chorus is slow, shmoozy and sexy-ish. Then the encore of the chorus changes to a really cheeky, boppy, cutesy beat.. My question is what to wear? I know jazz and big band is traditionally really formal but I dont want to go over the top and also the second part of the song wouldn't work with like a ballgown. If I wear one of my cocktail dresses with flats I look to young and it's too sexy with heels... I'm finding it difficult because it's like two songs in one. Sorry to be difficult! Anyway, I don't have time to go shopping, but any ideas that I could put together please? THANKS!!

That sounds like a winning outfit to me... I just LEARNED something.. I play a lot of Folk and Jazz festivals and have for years... and I usually look more like one of the homeless people outside the fence than the waiters inside the fence... so maybe I had better clean up my act... does GOOD WILL have any used Tux's. I have acctualy been stopped at the performer's entrance by security guards and, when I have shown them my ALL ACCESS PASS they have said.. "Yeah.. sure... I can buy one of THOSE at 7 11" and I couldn't get in until someone vouoched for me.

Personally, I think I sexy cocktail dress with heels works for shmoozy or cutesy. That era of music is typically glamorous. In my experience with musical theatre, it's very rare that something seems too over the top or too sexy (unless you're playing a witch or something).
