Are French Horn notes the same as Trumpet notes?
-
I'm an Eighth grader who plays the Trumpet. Next year, in High School, I will have a much broader range of instruments available for me to play. I'm planning on playing either Saxophone, or French Horn. I'm planning on getting a wind control machine for Christmas, which will teach me the Saxophone, but if I don't get that, I will play the French Horn. If I do play the French Horn, are the notes you play on the F. Horn's keys, the same as if you were playing a Trumpet's valves? Thank you for baring with me, all help is greatly appreciated. * Don't worry about the whole mouthpiece thing, I've got a great embouchure and can play higher notes.

Answer:
1) Why change now? Any reason? 2) If you are looking at music as a career, I would not recommend adding any other instruments at this time. Give your embouchure time to stabilize and develop. Master one, THEN look at others when your chops are more mature. In answer to your question, though, some fingerings are the same, some are not. Trumpets are pitched in B-flat, and French horns are pitched in F, so a C on a trumpet will not sound like a C on a French horn, even though the fingering might be the same; you'll have to train you ear for the difference. A bit harder than you think, but not that hard.

Great embouchure on trumpet doesn't mean anything for the F-horn. If you really want to be a great musician you should probably stay on trumpet so your don't have to play catch up. If you decide you want to play the F-horn, remember that its not a trumpet. The embouchure is different, the key is different, the fingerings (while similar) are different. You may want to get private lessons when you are getting started to ensure you are starting with the right techniques so you don't have to go back and relearn things.
