What are some good monologues for teenagers?

Where can I find really great monologues?

  • I'm looking for monologues that are bada$s. And of a bada$S chick. I'm having problems getting motivated to memorize a monologue that I'm not passionate about. I like, sly talkin, witty, sophisticated, stubborn etc to reflect certain characters. I like dramatic monologues to thatsho great emotion. Not cliche monologues. I don't look my age. I can pass for 17-23. Also what are the 3 types of monologues (or more) that a girl should have memorized. Before every audition? And what are your reccomendations of monologues to memorize? Thanks so much in advance!

  • Answer:

The best way to find unusual monologues, ones that hundreds of others aren't doing, is by reading loads of plays, from all eras. My daughter, who is a pro actor, goes into charity shops (thrift shops, I think you call them) and buys play books for very little cost, and reads through them As well as good practice for cold-reading, characterisation, etc, you can find some really great and almost unheard of monologues. She tells me that she always has at least 25 monologues which she could perform at any given time, with only a very brief glance through before the audition. She has about 5 Shakespeare/Johnson/Sheridan ones, 5 very modern 'kick-***' ones, 5 comedy, 5 emotional or Austen/Bronte types, and 5 quirky ones. Then if you do one, and they ask if you have anything else, you can ask what sort they'd like, any particular writer, and can more or less deliver on the spot. That always impresses - but only if you really can do it, of course! Good luck!
