What is this guitar called?
-
My Mom bought a guitar back in 1967 that I thought was a classical guitar. It has nylon strings and a wide neck, but it is the same size as a regular steel string guitar in the body. It also has a nut on the bottom with the strap attached. I went searching for a guitar similar to hers. I like it because the sound is so rich. I got my hands on a classical guitar, but I thought surely the seller was mistaken and this must be a 3/4 size. Imagine my surprise when I went into the music store asking for a "Classical", that is, nylon string guitar and they pull out something that also looks like it is for a child. It's got the nylon strings and wider neck, but it is tiny! And there's no strap nut. What kind of guitar does she have? Is that style commonly sold nowadays? It has a tie bridge. Sorry, I can't get pics. It's in NY, I'm in GA, and they're dealing with flood clean up after Irene. But I'm telling you, it's an over-grown classical, with a wide neck, tie bridge, nylon strings, and a strap nut. Mom said she'd heard maybe it was a "folk" guitar, but I'm having trouble finding information on that. Could it possibly be a Spanish guitar of some sort, for use in a guitar ensemble?

Answer:
It's impossible to tell you unless you post pictures. It sounds like someone mistakenly put nylon strings on a steel string guitar. What kind of bridge does it have? A tie bridge like a classical guitar or a pin bridge like a steel string guitar?
