How To Play Guitar?

I forgot how to play guitar?

  • Hello people, Years ago I started to play guitar. Those days I didn't care about my thumb position and my thumb was always on top of the fret. And I was playing popular songs (I mean I wasn't playing the classical technique). Then one day we had to change the city and moved to another and there I found a new guitar teacher but he was a classical guitar teacher. So I started learning classical guitar technique. But, he told me that, I have to change my left hand position. He told me that my thumb should be behind the fret, not on top of that. I did that. It was very difficult to adjust to this new position and actually I never could do that. I tried that for 1,5 years and then I decided that classical technique is not my thing. So I decided to go back to my old style. But now I had a problem. My left hand couldn't find the chords as it had done years ago. I had forgotten to play guitar... Years have passed and I still cannot play guitar. I study the chords again but it doesn't happen. I really like music and forgetting how to play the guitar is a disaster. Any suggestion for me friends? Thank you very much and have a nice day.

After having played the guitar for awhile it becomes second nature. Just like riding a bicycle. How can you forget how to play if all you have to do is to play those chords again and keep practicing.

You probably won't forget the chords per se. But the muscle memory in your fingers will be gone! It make take a little to get it back, but by just practicing a little it'll come back! That happened with me. I played clarinet for years, stopped for a few, then tried to pick it up again. The muscles in my face to hold the embesure were so weak!
