How to tune a new violin strings?

Why do violin strings keep loosening?

  • My violin strings on my new (cheap) violin keep loosening! UGH!!!! How can I get this to stop. Do I have to tune it every 5 minutes, because it goes out of tune like crazy! This also happened with another violin I had. It wasn't as bad (going out of tune), but the strings did just pop off basically when I wasn't playing it. :( Thanks!

  • Answer:

Slipping pegs Take the string off the peg and remove it. Take chalk and rub it over the part of the peg which fits into the peg box. Put the peg back in and put the string into the hole in the peg. Wrap the string by turning the peg. As you turn the peg guide the string back and forth across the shaft of the peg. Make sure that when you finish it is coming off the peg at the side of the peg box near the handle of the peg. This will help pull the peg into the hole and with the help of the chalk, it should seat firmly.

1. Get a humidifier and put it in your case. Especially in the winter the wood will dry out and that causes the pegs to shrink and slip. 2. Pull the peg out slightly and rub a graphite pencil tip around the inside of the hole and the peg where it goes in the hole. This will help keep them from slipping. 3. Push in on the pegs while turning them, but don't ever try to pound the peg in to keep it from slipping!

If you got a really cheap violin the pegs were never fitted properly, In order for pegs to work and to hold the string they have to be individually fitted to the holes in your peg box. The only long-term solution is to take it to a repair shop and have the pegs fitted so they don't slip all the time.

The new violin probably has new strings which will stretch quite a bit until they have stretched out completely. This is common. Be sure that the tuning pegs are in good condition and that they are not slipping. Make sure to gently push them into the peg holes tightly and use the fine tuners as much as possible. If you continue having trouble than ask your teacher to take a look at it or take it into the store that you got it from and ask them to adjust it for you. (explain exactly what is happening)
