Which position is the best to play guitar?
-
The position I'm having it's KILLING me. I mean, I don't really have a position. Usually, I practice in the first position I find myself in, but I can't last more than 10 minutes, the least. I'm having a Stratocaster, and I find it too difficult to hold it. I think it's one of the most hard to sit guitars. Les Paul have the body a lot more bigger, so you can see it better. Randy Rhoads's have the V's, which assure's you a better positions. DON'T ASK ME TO CHANGE THE GUITAR, because I don't have enough money too. Maybe some pictures with a good holding position. I also have a strap, but I don't understand how people use it. I saw a lot of people playing with a strap, but I can't get it to work. I put it, but cannot fix it. Better show me some pictures, to hold my Stratocaster electric guitar better. I want to practice many, many hours a day, especially now when I have time, on summer, but the position is killing me. 10 minutes and I'm having nightmares. So please, suggest a better position, with pictures, if you can! Thanks, and please help me, I'm desperated!!!

Not sure why you are having so much trouble. A strat is one of the more comfortable guitar shapes to play on. That is why the shape is so popular. There are thousands of photos all over the web of people playing the guitar. BTW the V shaped guitar is one of the most awkward guitars to play while sitting. Sit in a chair without arms on it. Make sure that the chair is not too tall. (you should be able to place both feet flat on the floor and your knees should sit slightly above your waist).Sit up straight. The curve of the guitar (the guitars waist) should sit on your right leg very close to your body. Your elbow should be ABOVE the guitar with you forearm touching the upper back edge and your hand comfortably sitting right over the strings. Many younger students mistakenly keep there right arm too low with the elbow behind the guitar. This is incorrect. With the elbow above the back edge and the forearm touching you will have a more natural strum position. The neck of the guitar should be fairly level or inclined slightly. The left hand should "pinch" the neck, not "grab" it. The left hand thumb should be in the middle of the back of the neck. This helps get the fingers out in front of the neck making it easier to play. I strongly suggest that you take some lessons to get you playing correctly. If you are having so much trouble simply holding the guitar then there are probably other bad habits that you are also developing. The fastest, easiest, best way to learn is with lessons from a good qualified local instructor. You can learn more in one MONTH of lessons than you can in a YEAR of trying to teach yourself. Once you get the feel of sitting and playing than you can adjust your strap so that the guitar is at about the same relative height when you are standing. (same distance from your shoulders) The strap goes over your left shoulder.

If you want to palm mute, then you would put your hand on the edge of the bridge. It gives you a muted effect. But if you do not want to mute the sound, then you should just have your hand like hanging over the strings, i guess you could say. The right way to position your hand is basically however you are most comfortable without touching the strings. Only touch them at the edge of the bridge if you want to palm mute.
