What book should I use to teach playing on a bass guitar?

What book should I use to teach myself bass guitar?

  • Answer:

I use Hal Leonard Bass Method by Ed Friedland. I am on song 60. It has everything I want. There are enough pictures, but just barely. It teaches reading sheet music. Do you want to learn to read music or just play tab? (Tab is a simplified system of notation. Most rock and pop sheet music is in tab.) It has a WIDE variety of genres: blues, country, pop, rock, metal. I would also recommend Todd Johnson Electric Bass Technique Builders (Alfred's Publishing). I have not done the exercises but the demonstrations of technique have been very helpful. I have watched them several times. There is some stuff on YouTube about technique but it is hard to sort through all of it. Without good technique, you can get carpel tunnel syndrome or repetitive stress injury. Injuries can be permanent. However, the truth is that some of the best, such as Paul McCartney, have poor technique. Teachers are a mixed bag. My first teacher insisted on only doing tab, would not discuss technique at all and for lessons mostly wanted me to just play along. My second teacher gave me stuff that was just plain too advanced. They both both both professional musicians. Teaching it is very different than knowing it. If I could find an instructor that could work patiently with a beginner I would take lessons. But I cannot find one. Unless you can get recommendations from someone you know, just go it on your own. Musicdojo.com looks good, but I have not tried it. I think you need a webcam.

youtube, better to see something practical

I recomend you to buy a DVD. With DVD you can watch the movement of fingers very clear. Or may be it's good for you to form a small band and practice with your friends. It is very good. I learned bass guitar in this way.
