Does anybody have tips on learning a guitar after bass?

Learning to play Cello as a Bass player - tips needed?

  • My question is, would it be that hard for a bass player to learn how to play a cello? I've been studying bass guitar for the past couple of years, and although I still have to work on my jazz/funk playing abilities, I'm good at improvising on any genre, and I'm pretty much looking forward to do that on a cello. I haven't had much experience with fretless/upright basses, I did find it a little (more) tricky to handle the notes and such (it got harder the closer I got to the bridge) .I've read almost every tip I could find on the internet, but how do you guys (cellists) do it ? How can you precisely tell which note is which, where the note changes (and by precisely i mean with every half-step on the way) ? Also, is a teacher a must-have when learning to play a cello ? I never took actual lessons for bass, I learned more than decent musical theory from the internet and from some friends of mine( that actually took lessons, went to music school/high-school/college) , I took time to overlook most modern and classical music genres and such (and surprisingly I turned out a better bass player than most of my bass playing friends that had teachers) and the rest just came naturally with a couple of hours of practice every single day.Is it possible to properly learn how to play a cello by instructional videos/books alone ? I love music (not just a particular genre of it, but good music in general) and I would be willing to practice for at least 2-3 hours a day. And my last question: Would a cheap cello ruin the whole beginner experience ? I'm not really familiar with how cheap cellos sound like, but I don't have that much patience to wait and afford a decent one in the next couple of months also (I read that a decent - beginner one would be 1000 $ *sigh*). I was thinking about this one http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_gothic_cello_44.htm Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting anything too great of course. All I want is the capability of the instrument to produce decently pleasurable sounds with enough hard work put into it. Anyhow, thank you for taking your time tor read this, I apologize for the long post on such silly questions.I'm looking forward to your answers, sincere thanks in advance.
