yamaha if you're just starting. It's not nice but it'll help you find out if you like it or not. After that there are plenty of brands to go to (Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, squire... etc.). Your best bet at finding a good one is by looking on craigslist or ebay. good luck.

Consider renting a good instrument. If you decide you don't like bass you can turn it in. If you fall in love with bass you can rent to own.
