Where can I buy a nice but reasonably priced acoustic guitar from?

Where would be the most reasonable priced place to buy a guitar?

  • Answer:

Craigslist is a great place to look for guitars because you can go try it out before you buy it. I've actually bought my last 2 guitars on Ebay. I don't typically advise buying an instrument online unless you know what you're looking for and have a good idea before hand what brands and models you want. I bought a Schecter guitar on Ebay though that was a factory 2nd (small blemish I never did actually find). I paid about 1/2 what the same guitar was selling for at Guitar Center. A couple years later I sold that same guitar on Craigslist for the same amount I paid for it and bought a better guitar off Ebay for the same amount, again, paying about half what the same guitar would have cost at a music store. Garage sales are great if you stumble on a good guitar at one. I know a guy whose wife was at a garage sale and saw an electric guitar. She called him and he went to look at it. It was an older Gretsch and he got it for about $100. The lady selling it only wanted $75 for it, but he told her it was worth much more than that but she wouldn't take more than $100. Things like that don't happen very often though. Pawn shops are good too, but selection is limited and you need to know your way around a guitar to be sure you don't get taken. Nothing wrong with music shops either, just expect to pay a bit more. I'm really not a guitar snob, but I would advise you not to buy a First Act, Maestro "by Gibson", or similar toy guitar from Walmart or Best Buy. They're just not worth the money and you can get a much better instrument if you look around for a quality used guitar. Really, I don't think that's being snobbish, just honest. I've owned several very nice guitars and I've never paid over $500 for any of them.

Your local music store is the best place to shop for a new guitar. A garage sale instrument is often damaged and in bad shape. The instruments from big box stores like wal-mart or target are essentially over priced toys that do not play very well at all. Pawn shops usually are trying to make as much money as possible. I have often seen used instruments in pawn shops priced HIGHER than what the same instrument would cost NEW in your local music stores. Your local music stores ALWAYS discounts instruments. Just ask what the sale price is on any item to find out. They have to compete with huge chain stores like guitar center and discount music catalogs like musicians friend. (both good sources for low cost instruments) They may not always be able to match those prices, but they more than make up for it in terms of service. Most local music stores will go out of their way to help you find the right instrument for your budget. They want you to keep coming back to them for all of your musical needs. If you are an aspiring guitarist, you WILL need strings, picks, music books, guitar tuners, amps, upgrades, advice, etc. This is why it is a good idea to cultivate a relationship with your local music stores. Regular customers get treated like friends. They learn your name, remember what you bought, DISCOUNT everyday items, help you with whatever problems you may be having with equipment, etc. They can even help you learn by referring you to local instructors or in store lessons.

You don't have to go and pay top dollar for a guitar. Of course it depends on if you are a hard core player or not. If you're just starting out, you can get a guitar at Walmart. Obviously they aren't going to be the "best quality" and a lot of guitar snobs will tell you to get a really nice (and expensive one). Like I said, if you are a hard core player than getting a nice quality guitar would be a good investment. However, if you're just starting out, there's nothing wrong with getting a $20 or $25 guitar at Walmart. ~Rylee~

you can get them almost anywhere. most music stores you can talk them down a few depending on the price of the guitar your looking at and how mass produced it is. but i love craigslist. you can always search do research and go try it out before you buy it. al ways always do research on the guitar your looking for see what it cost new what it cost used and see what people say about the tone and what they see as problems

If you can recognize a bargain then shopping the signs posted at the stores or on Craig's list, Pawn Shops, Garage sales etc. are all good. If you can't recognize a bargain then I suggest Guitar Center.
