What is the best way to memorize music?
-
so I've been in band for about 6 years now. and I've never been able to memorize music. i just blank out in spots. Normally it doesn't matter because my band is so large that if one person falls out from time to time you cant hear the difference. but this year i was made second in command which means i have to be able to play my music at any given moment. I just found out that i was given this position and was given the music today. Tomorrow is the first day of band camp. so i am really freaking out right now... any tips on how to memorizing music because just playing it over and over isn't really working for me

Answer:
What I do to help memorize my music for band is that I play four or five measures at a time and I repeat it a few times. Then I turn my music around and try to play it. If I miss a part I play that part a few more times and try again. I do that until I have half the first page memorized. I usually then take a break for five minutes and then play the part I just memorized. If I have that down I continue with the rest of the music. If I don't I go back to the part I missed. It usually helps if you do at most five measures at a time. You may try more but I find that five measures is pushing it. Just what ever you do don't start with the last measure because you never start playing with the last measure first. I hope this helps

memorize it in small sections. also try looking the piece up on youtube and playing with the recording, this will help you put the pieces and layers together and even if you do get lost, listening to the other parts will help you get back on track hope this helps!!!

I usually break it up into 8 measure sections. I like to memorize the last few measures first. then back up a bit and learn that and continue on to the end.Keep backing up 8 measures at a time. You are always going to what you already know.

Break it into sections and work on it repeatedly section by section. Most songs have repeatable patterns to them so you just have to know what those are and where they repeat. Just understanding the song and having a good feel for it and repeatedly practicing it is the only way I know of though. No magic pill for it.

Keep playing and you will later on memorize each line at a time.

Repetition is the key to memorization. Seriously. There isn't some pill you can take. You can't just sleep and magically wake up playing music. You have to woodshed the music over and over. You aren't expected to be able to play all the music the first day of camp. Everyday, practice a section of the music. Look at it, look for any changes, accidentals, etc. Play it while looking a few times. Then turn the stand around and give it a try. Keep practicing. It gets easier with time, but the only way to memorize music is practice. No way around it.
