What was life like during reconstruction compared to life with jim crow laws for african americans?

right after the civil war was own by the north the reconstruction area started. at first many laws and programs were created to help the "freedmen" begin to start a new life. the freedmen's bureau was created to help ex-slaves find lost family members and to find jobs. this lasted for a couple years, but after the compromise of 1877, in which Hayes and the southern candidate were neck and neck, the north and south came to an agreement. the south would vote for hayes making him president, if the north took its troops out of the south thus ending reconstruction. the north agreed, and as soon as the troops were removed the KKK started its tactics of intimidation and violence to bring the ex-slaves back to their "rightful" place. the jim crow laws were instituted to make sure any blacks that were not second class were soon punished and oppressed. it was almost a hundred years later when the civil rights program finally gained fround again in 1969.

Early on during reconstruction, Blacks in the south were increasingly given political rights (like voting rights) and social rights, while people who had supported southern independence had political rights taken away from them. The lawmakers doing this wanted a strong federal government that would bring the southern states back into line politically and make their economies more industrial, like in the north, (paid for by heavy taxes in the south) so that southerners would support the same economic policies as northerners. The lawmakers (known as radical republicans) were willing to give Blacks rights to get support for this. Groups like the Klu Klux Klan formed in response- the Klan wanted to protect the political rights of Whites and go back to oppressing Blacks. So although Blacks had more freedom than before (but still much less than now), murder and violent harassment was also extremely common. The Jim Crow era was partially a response to this, meeting some of the demands of the Klan. Although there was not a return to slavery, Blacks had their political rights restricted, were segregated, etc. This helped regain the confidence of the White population in the former confederate states, when paired with less radical economic policies towards the south. However, by this time the end of slavery was already entrenched, and during the "Great Migration" north Blacks were able to shift from the slave-like conditions in agricultural sharecropping work in the south to industrial work in the north (and in many southern cities too).
