How can I teach in University with just a Masters?

Get a Masters in General History or a specialization?

  • I just received my bachelors in history and am doing an alternative route program to teacher's certification in NJ. Since the job market isn't the greatest right now I want to continue my education and get a masters in history so I can at least temporarily adjunct teach at a college and if I get a middle/high school job I can adjunct at night. My question is; I'm looking at Monmouth university and also rutgers. Rutgers just offers a masters in global history. Monmouth offers a general history degree alongside specializations in Europe, US, and World. Do you think with the market just getting a general MA in history is better for getting an adjunct position or is a specialization preferred. Like if I got it in European history for example, would I be able to adjunct teach US history and visa versa. Much appreciated. -PS: can you publish your masters thesis?

  • Answer:

Either. You need to figure that roughly half of your potential classes will be US History. The other half would be some sort of modified Western Civ. class. Your biggest problem will be not having an education degree, as many states won't let you do more than sub without one.
