I dont know where to go on the court in basketball.?

Ive been playing basketball a lot lately at the gym for cardio purposes, plus its fun. i used to play it a lot with my friends in high school but stopped playing casually for years. Lately ive been loving basketball, its the only sport i watch, the only video game i play is nba2k, and i love doing it on my days off from weight lifting, plus i play in a local asian/filipino league. One problem i realized lately, which i should have realized earlier though, is that i dont really know where to go on the court w/o the basketball, if i have the basketball i pretty much know where to go, either drive to the basket, shoot, or pass to the open man. YET im not a guard, im a bigger guy so i play more of a forward position. In my league, when we get down to our court im always playing the corner, but i find myself either staying in that corner the whole time or running to the basket to try to grab a rebound. but i find that i never get the ball because i dont even know how to move on the court without the basketball. other than that i really dont know where the hell to go. do you guys have any tips for me because i do want to get better at the game as i have taken a late interest in it.

Answer:
Generally, big men are moved around to spread the floor, post up, or set picks. If you have a decent jump shot, set a pick for your teammate and tell him to pass to you or drive depending on how the defense reacts. Another thing you should do is post up other players. Try and gain inside position close to the basket then call for the ball. Once you catch it try and back him down to score or pass outside if a double team comes. Generally you should be moving around the court so you will make the defense work and they won't have as much energy for offense.

I play on a my HS team and we have an offense called the flex. Maybe you should ask your teammates/friends to develop an offensive scheme so that EVERYONE knows where to go. Also, if you don't want an offense, just remember, when someone on your team drives to the hoop, get out of the way. If someone dribbles towards you, cut backdoor.

Cut to the basket and if you don't the ball go to the other corner. Set screens for teammates and later they will hopefully set screens for you to get open. Run to the top of the free throw line to get an open look ppl usually never stand there

It really depends on your skill set. If you have a good jump shot, you should try and get open, use footwork to get away from your man, call for the open J and shoot it. If you like to drive, then, again, try and get away from your man, and find an open lane to the basket. You can even ask your coach if he wants to set up a play for you. My best advice for you is to watch some basketball games, college or NBA. If youre a bigman shooter, watch Kevin Durant on OKC, or Dirk Nowitzki on Dallas. If you drive alot, watch Lebron James on Miami. And its funny that youre really into 2k, thats how i got back into playing basketball lol

If you're fast enough to make quick cuts to the net or to the key then do it. Maybe work on a post up game in your spare time as well then you can hang in and around the key giving off-ball and on-ball screens to free yourself up for open looks close to the basket. If you can go along the base line and cut to the key and beat out your defender any smart player will send you the ball or will feel more comfortable putting up a shot because you'll be in position for a rebound. I play big man whenever I play with my friends and some of them are taller than me but I beat them out because I'm pretty strong, know how to post up, and can make cleaner cuts than they can because I know where I want to be on the court. Don't go by any textbook definition of the position you play. Dirk Nowitzki plays PF and he's most often seen shooting from and receiving passes in positions you'd normally see a lot smaller players. If you have certain spots on the floor you're good from most of the time work your way around to there. Setting screens and opening up other players is the best way to show value and get the ball. If you can show to your teammates that you're a smart player they'll trust you with the ball. As a bigger guy I know that it's my knowledge of the game, not my skill necessarily that gets me the touches i get when I play.

I'm kind of the same type of player, and I know exactly what you mean. I'm 6'1" and 180lbs, but my play style is more like that of a guard's than a big man. I'm best with the ball in my hands - but when I don't have the ball, I'm not nearly as good. The key is to decide on a role and position you want to play, then work from there. For example, if you decide that you want to be a power forward, you would normally set up in the low block or high post. Fight for position and jump-stop to catch the entry pass, so as to keep it away from your defender. That's the easy thing to do. But if you're more of a small forward (or just don't post up most), then you'll need to focus on off ball movement. Running around the court, trying to run your defender into a pick or a teammate, confusing them, and generally making it one hell of an annoying cardio workout for them, in the hopes of losing them and getting a quality look. Offball movement is very important - but a lot of times guys are not so keen to put much effort into it. I personally tend to stand near the baseline around 8 to 10 feet away from the basket when I'm not moving off-ball. It's a bad habit when there's a defender lurking nearby: close enough to intercept a pass and/or quickly cut me off if I get the ball, yet far enough to play help defense on a cutter/slasher. My suggestion is that if you find yourself without the ball and not knowing what to do, go set a pick for the ball handler or a teammate, or just run around, cutting back and forth, moving across screens, and doing your best to get open.

Usually when ur on.defense its a little.simpler... As far as where to go, in organized/team basketball you usually have defensive plays like 2-3, 3-2, man, etc. And as the players on offense swing the ball to.different places on the court, you don't jus follow the ball.... For wutever person has the ball there is a person.designated to defend him... Or group of 2ppl to form a trap.... Now with man defense you stay on your opponent no matter where he is on the court whether he has the ball or not... I wish I had a drawing board right now lol... Good luck
