How to build up confident during trials?

Tips for basketball trials?

  • I've got basketball trials coming up soon. And I've been working on my cardio fitness mainly. I'm keen to get some skill sets going. Previously I was a forward, but many of my school mates have grown taller and I no longer have the height to be a forward, so I've been working hard to try and become a guard. I've got some good shooting drills sorted, defence stuff as well - the only thing is I need some help finding some dribbling skills. Also, techniques for ball handling. How should I position my body, should I dribble the ball to the side OR in front of me? Also, any drills to build confidence when there is someone guarding you? AND FINALLY. . . Any tips coaches or selectors have when they lookout for players at trials?

  • Answer:

Your main concern seems to be dribble. Main point here: Don't be fancy, go to fundamentals. Just try guard the ball, keeping it safe, dribble low and fast. Try to only use your side if you don't plan on driving in, ie waiting for a man to come off a pick. Just be simple, right to left, no between the legs no nothing, just basic. Dont know how else to put it, its so crutial man :(

Keep ball close while dribbling I played i was a shooter but coach pushed me to be more You will have to train your off hand...... i had a drill where id stare at a spot where i couldnt look down and dribble ... first switching hands and when i got better 2 balls at same time ... If you can go either way especially if you can get low its very hard to gaurd ... I wasnt the tallest (5'11) one of 3 on the team under 6 feet ...... i just had to get low while driving .... and shoot high and quick ... all my layups had to go high off backboard ...... What got me playing time was my work If you cant dribble focus on defense ..... work on your side to side and keeping your knees bent and never cross your feet ..... there is many drills that make you better ... its going to take hard work

Just play hard don't try anything fancy and don't be nervous play with confidence knowing what you can do if you can shoot, shoot the ball play to your strengths. Also be smart about what shows you take don't be trigger happy or don't be afraid to shoot it.
