Is it useless to keep up with current events?

At first, you may believe this question has a self-evident, obvious answer, but hear me out. I'm not saying it is bad to be informed on what is happening in the world, I just don't think it does any good. People will perceive you as uneducated and unintelligent if you appear to not know anything going on. But what if you vigorously study philosophy so you will be prepared to handle anything that life throws at you. A favorite quote of mine: "How ridiculous and how strange to be surprised at anything which happens in life!" - Marcus Aurelius. Maybe those people who watch the news and read the news paper 5 minutes in the morning with coffee are really less capable of dealing with life than I am, but due to their readings of a few horror stories in the news: rapes, deaths, murders, robberies, natural disasters, political arguments, religious nonsense (in summary, human beings living ignorantly without reason or virtue) they may be regraded as more intelligent than me. Being aware about events does not mean you are capable of handling them. For example, there is nothing I can do about an earthquake in japan. I feel a deep sense of sympathy for my fellow human beings struggling over there, but it is outside my realm of control. I have lived long enough to expect many tragedies and misfortunes. The news just continues to repeat things I have already heard many times, just in different locations, or affecting different people. What can you say about this?

its not necessary but to be a part of civilization it seems so important.

I don't keep up with current events anymore, because to be honest - the media only shows you what they want you to see. People in african villages don't keep up with "current events" and they are just fine.

Sometimes helping to raise awareness can effect change. For example what if more were aware of this: Please watch this first video linked here. It’s only one minute. You’re going to be impressed. This is a local news video of a witness named Kenny Johannemann testifying to explosions that happened in the basement of one of the WTC towers. While he is testifying you still see both of the twin towers burning behind him in the background. This was live footage and it's only ONE minute long. Go ahead and watch this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEuzU3LMgCA (YouTube Key Words: Johannemann suicide) Those explosions were from charges that were set up to weaken the structure preparatory to pulling the tower. You didn’t see this on TV. Does that prick your interest? Now look at this. Barry Jennings was another witness that got stuck in Building Seven during 9/11. Building Seven fell later that same day but was NEVER hit by a jet. Watch his account here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbbZE7c3a8Q (YouTube Key Words: Barry Jennings dead age – more hits when “dead age” excluded) Again, the explosions he talked about were from charges that were set up to weaken the structure preparatory to pulling down this building. Again, you didn't see Barry’s testimony on TV. Here’s some different evidence. Steve Jones, a nuclear physicist, obtained WTC dust samples from the collapsed WTC towers and analyzed it. He reported his detailed findings here in Boston: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1957490867030316250&ei=JspdSaLNBZa4qAObztThDw&q=steve+jones+boston (Google Video Key Words: Steve Jones Boston) Those “red chips” he talked about weren’t the smoking gun they were THE GUN. See the article here: http://www.prisonplanet.com/scientists-find-active-super-thermite-in-wtc-dust.html Click here for his actual peer-reviewed paper:: http://www.bentham.org/open/tocpj/articles/V002/7TOCPJ.htm?TOCPJ/2009/00000002/00000001/7TOCPJ.SGM Now get a load of this: The BBC reported the collapse of the Solomon Building (Building Seven) 20 minutes BEFORE it actually collapsed. Watch that here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlL6ewlW6oc (YouTube Key Words: BBC Solomon slips – you get more hits by excluding “slips”) How did the BBC know in advance that Building Seven would collapse? The fact that it was announced in advance is strong support that the flow of information on this tragedy was being controlled. Were the people at the BBC the only people privy to this information? Probably not. Larry Silverstein was the leaseholder of Building Seven. In a 2002 PBS documentary he talked about how he discussed the Building Seven situation with the fire department and how the decision was made by that department to "pull" it. Well, there is one problem with his testimony that you may want to consider. It takes about a week to rig a building with explosives before you pull it. So are buildings constructed with built-in explosives just in case they need to be blown up in a hurry? Building Seven went down that same day. Whoops! Watch Larry's testimony from the PBS documentary here in this short clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3E-26oVIIs (YouTube Key words: PBS Silverstein) Incidentally, luckily for Larry, he insured his property in the nick of time just six months before September 11th! It was a sweet deal. So who orchestrated this terrorist event anyway? They had to get past the FBI and CIA and prepare at least three buildings for demolition as well as direct the activities of men with box cutters (if they even existed). It’s clear from the evidence presented here so far that at least some of the media was in on this. What else could explain the BBC blunder? They had to control the information to those of us who might not like the idea that a few thousand people had to be killed in order to fulfill some kind of agenda. What’s in it for these people that were “in the know?” Aaron Russo was a famous movie producer who became best friends with one of the Rockefeller family members (Remember “The Rose” and "Trading Places" starring Eddie Murphy?). This is the same Rockefeller family that is a large shareholder of the Federal Reserve Bank -- a private company that loans money to our government and contributes to our huge national debt. You see the name “Federal Reserve” at the top the dollar bill. Yes, we're talking about THAT Bank! Anyway, the upshot of this friendship was that in the year 2000 (11 months before 9/11) Aaron Russo learned from his Rockefeller buddy that there was going to be an "event". He was told that out of this event the U.S. would go into Afghanistan and look for Bin Laden in Caves and then the U.S. would go into Iraq. His fascinating testimony about this "event" starts at 26:45 here in this interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGAaPjqdbgQ (Google Video Key Words: Aaron Russo Warnings) Now see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZEvA8BCoBw

It's useless to keep up with ALL current events. I hate to say it, but many things that happen in the world aren't worth knowing; they don't affect us or involve us in any way. The only thing they do is make us more fearful of 'possibilities'...taaa daa! But the truly healthy way to live(psychologically, in my opinion) is to only be concerned with what affects you...and be free of anything else; efficiency. I remember a time of records and a single phone; no computer...and it was peaceful. Information isn't it's own excuse to be. Just because it exists, it doesn't mean it's worth knowing. We may not realize it now, but we will...usually after much hardship and pain.

I agree.. I do not read the newspaper, or watch news on TV, I don't even have cable or satellite because I think it is a waste of money.. TV is boring, manipulative and repetitive. If there is anything I want to know about, I find it out. I keep aware of the things that matter to me, without swallowing 5 tonnes of useless smut along with it. People are shocked all the time that I don't know about things on the news.. When everyone was freaking out about this wedding.. I said.. What wedding? and people thought I was insane.. I guess watching the wedding of some British royal brat was important to a large amount of people.. but to me it's meaningless, I don't care because I don't know them and I never will. They have no impact on my life whatsoever.. why bother to get so obsessive over something like that? Same with earthquakes and disasters elsewhere.. there is nothing I can do, why get all worked up over it? I feel for people I do.. but I also think that once you've been hit by hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes so many times, you should wise up and build somewhere else. I live where I do because it's a place safe from all of those dangers. It always irks me how people live in places where these things happen, repeatedly.. and yet they are always so shocked and surprised the next time disaster strikes.. MOVE AWAY! Every year the news reports hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes.. in the SAME PLACES. You've heard it once, you've heard it all.. I feel for the pain and suffering people go through in these situations, but I can't help but think that all they have to do is move somewhere else to avoid ever experiencing it again.
