What is post modernism in art exactly?

Where is art and the individual artist headed? post-postmodernism, metamodernism, pseudo-modernism...?

  • any artist or ppl who know anything about art in general that can inform me on where art is headed... it seems like its headed in a good direction for art, but as for the artist, whats going to happen to the individual... is the individual artist going to disappear, well yeah, im worried about wanting to be an artist because all these categories are like confining me, and have been for some time now, and it seems like the artworld takes a lot of the fun out of art... idk, ever since i started taking art seriously i havent rlly felt the same...

During times of crisis, like the global economic depression we are in right now, art tends to become more political. IMO political art is already making a comeback. Look at the Occupy protests: they are full of art. There is more art at an Occupy protest than there is at your local galleries. You could even consider the Occupy protests themselves as one big performance art piece, given that they do not have specific demands that they hope to enforce by means of their protesting. Occupy is protest for the sake of protest, just like l'art pour l'art, or art for art's sake. Another thing that happens in times of economic crisis is that a greater demand is placed on artists to make art that is serviceable and usable, instead of just contemplative. So you can expect a lot of artists to drop out of art and go into design or arts&crafts instead. Already there was an artist here at Yahoo Answers last week asking questions about using kitchen appliances in works of art. I couldn't answer that question, but I thought the question was typical in and of itself. I think there is a connection there with a few other questions I saw on Yahoo Answers about American 1950s vintage. I am guessing here, but I think that for a lot of younger people, there is something aesthetic, I would even say artistic, about 1950s imagery. For older people like myself, the 1950s represent repression, predictability and stuffiness, but for your generation it's probably an image of order, security and abundance, now forever lost. I don't think nostalgia is a very productive artistic methodology, but your generation obviously disagrees if the questions on Yahoo Answers are anything to go by. So, my three suggestions for you are: political art revival, usable art, nostalgia. Hope that helps, and don't forget to wear your petticoat ;-)
