How does an ionic bond form?

How to tell if an atom will form a covalent or ionic bond?

  • Answer:

if we know the number of valence electrons the atom has, then we do know if the atoms are nonmetal or metal (one can define the atom as being a metal or nonmetal based on the number of valence electrons, assuming it is not ionized). so if one of the atoms has less than 3 valence electrons, its going to be an ionic bond.
