What are free radicals?

Enthalpy and free radicals questions.?

  • The question is: The reaction between chlorine and methane free radicals can occur in two ways, CH4 + Cl. ------> CH3CL + H. CH4 + Cl. ------> CH3. + HCL (Notice the dots by the way) And the question is to work out the enthalpy of the two equations, which I can do but I want to know what the dots are or the radicals represent? Like what is Cl. and H. meant to mean?

  • Answer:

Its a way of representing a free radical CH3. is a methyl radical and Cl. is a atom of chlorine. The dot is an unpaired electron so these species are highly reactive and can't be isolated of course.
