Element's position on the periodic table- predict -type of bond -when combined with another element?

Answer:
Elements on the left/middle (metals or cations) generally tend to form ionic bonds with oppositely charged anions. Anions (nonmetals on the right) can form ionic bonds with cations as I just stated, but they can also form covalent bonds with other anions to form molecules. There is also something called a "metallic bond" but i'm not sure if they go over that in a first year chemistry course.
