Is a strong nucleophile a strong base?

Is the heat of reaction between strong acid and a strong base depend on the concentration of the acid and base?

  • Hi guys, So I did an experiment in one of my chemistry lab. They have these questions. Does the heat of reaction for the neutralization reaction of an acid and a base depend on the strength of the acid? Does the heat of reaction between strong acid and a strong base depend on the concentration of the acid and base ? According to what I saw in my experiment, the Delta T ( the temperature change ) is higher in the more concentration acid. But it 's not change in the weaker acid-base. However, the heat per mole I calculated is remain the same no matter what concentration of acid. So it makes me confuse, I read the book again but it 's not help me to answer these question. Can you please explain for me, Thanks

  • Answer:

you are stating two different things. If you have more acid + base, you get more heat energy, but the heat per mole of reactant should remain roughly the same. Think of it this way: Heat per mole is like a relative value, heat energy is like an absolute value. Heat of reaction is usually reported in energy per mole so this should be constant because it is relative to the moles of reactant you added. (this assumes same regular conditions: i.e. performed at room temperature and pressure, etc.)
