How do you do metric conversions?

Metric prefixes and conversions? HELP?

  • For homework my teacher gave us this worksheet but I don't know how to do it. I have to convert metric prefixes to other metric prefixes. Like I have to convert mega grams to deci grams and deca grams to tera grams and I have no clue what I'm doing. I think I have number 1 right but I'm not sure. The problem is: convert 8521 M g (mega grams) to d g (deci grams) so on a metric prefix chart, mega is 7 spaces away from deci (not counting the base unit) and since your moving down to a smaller prefix, the number is going to be bigger so I'm going to add 7 zeros to 8521? so it would be 85210000000? I don't know if that's how you figure it out though

  • Answer:

    This is an easy dimensional analysis problem: (8521 megagrams / 1) * (1000 kg / 1 megagram) * (10,000 decigrams / 1 kg) = 8.521e10 decigrams.
