Why did Yahoo!Chat change?

PLEASE CHECK MY ANSWER! Explain in terms of change in G why a reaction for which both change in H and change i?

  • in S are positive is sometimes spontaneous and sometimes not. I think its because it depends on whether on not when these two positive values are entered into the equation change in G = change in H - (changein temp * change in S) results in a value that is positive thereby meaning that it is spontaneous reaction. they could both be positive values Dh and Ds, but if ds is a very large positive value multiplied by a large temperature as well, then when subtracted from Dh which may also be positive, but smaller, than the result would be a negative value meaning that the reaction isnt spontaneous, but if change in h is greater than the positive value of change in s time change in temeprature, then the result would be positive and therefore meaning that the reaction is spontaneous. \Though both values may be postivie it depends on their magnitude that indicates wheter or not when they are entered into the equation, that the result would be negative meaning non spontaneous or positive meaning spontaneous. Thank you, if ive left anyting out please correct ti :D

  • Answer:

Hi, The reaction is spontaneous only when Delta G is negative, not positive. In all, yes, your explanation is correct (but please change the signs around!). I think the last few sentences would surfice though, indicating that a large enough change in Delta S will result in an overall negative Delta G value, at constant T.
