Law of multiple proportions "general chemistry"?
-
The elements nitrogen and hydrogen react together under various conditions to form 3 different compounds, each with its own unique set of properties. The mass of hydrogen required to react with 1.00 gram of nitrogen in the formation of the 3 compounds is given in the table below. The 3rd compound was discovered last. N+H compounds---------mass H------------------mass N--------------------empirical formula ammonia--------------------1.00 gram---------------4.63 grams--------------------- NH3 hydrazine-------------------1.00 gram---------------6.94 grams----------------------NH2 3rd compound------------1.00 gram---------------41.67 grams-------------------- ??? [1]: Show that this data is consistent with the Law of Multiple Proportions. Include mass data from all 3 compounds in your calculations. [2]: Determine the relative masses (as a ratio) for atoms of nitrogen and hydrogen from the masses of nitrogen and hydrogen in the table above that combined to form ammonia, NH3. (For example, if Sue weighs 120 lbs. and George weighs 180 lbs., Sue and George relative weights are 2 to 3 or 0.667.) [Hint: you will need to take the ratio of atoms in the formula into account.] (b) Can the actual masses of individual atoms of nitrogen and hydrogen be determined from the data in the able (without other information.)? [3]: if a correct formula can be determined for one of the compounds, say ammonia, then the formulas for the other compounds can be deduced using mass ratios. Deduce the formula for the 3rd compound in the table above. Please show the process you use.
