How can you tell if a reaction is spontaneous or non spontaneous?

Help with chemistry? redox v. non redox?

  • how do i tell between a redox and non redox reaction? i know that if there is no charge change, it is usually non redox. but how do i tell if there is a charge change? do i have to look at the periodic table? for example: 2Mg + Cl2 -> 2MgCl... is that a redox? Ba + S -> BaS.... is non redox? please explain an semi simple method for how i tell if it is redox or nonredox

  • Answer:

    Ba + S → BaS... is a Redox reaction The reduction reaction is S + 2e− → S 2− The oxidation reaction is Ba 2+ → 2e- + Ba

They are bothe redox reactions. The clue is to see if elements become compounds or compounds become elements. Mg + Cl2 --------> MgCl2 Mg and Cl appear as elements then appear combined in a compound, MgCl2. The same in: Ba + S -------> BaS Look at: 2 HgO ----------> 2 Hg + O2: a compound becomes elements. Look at: 2 KClO3 ---------> 2KCl + 3 O2 oxygen is combined in reactant and elementalas a product = redox. In more complocated systems you have to determine the oxidation numbers to see if they have changed. If so, its a redox reaction. Most single replacement reactions are redox reactions.
