What is a good chemistry question to challenge my teacher with?

  • Answer:

i'd go with James' question, as it is not the sort of thing that is taught, nor can the answer be easily guessed. i'm assuming (as your teacher would) that not many of the valence electrons of the mercury atoms are shared, so the "sea" of electrons that hold the solid metal together would require little energy to become a liquid. As for the colouring of gold, it can also be assumed that all other frequencies of light are absorbed and only the characteristic yellow is reflected.

Hi AM: How about: Please Sir (Miss) why is mercury a liquid? or, Please Sir (Miss) why is gold gold colored? These questions have bothered alchemists and chemists for centuries. The accepted explanation involves relativity effects! That should stump him (her)! dr p
