Both degrees require a lot of preparation. Honestly unless you want to give classes in advanced math or do research at a major university, there aren't a lot of options with a degree in mathematics. Mechanical engineering is becoming an outdated field with new fields of study such as mechatronics and robotics being introduced. I'm personally an engineering student and I'm looking into mechatronics. If you only have 21 credit hours (I have 18 credit hours) you're gonna be in school for at least another 3 to 3.5 years. My projected graduation date is 2014 and my program consists of about 120 credit hours minus any extra certifications and specializations I might want to pursue. If you do not wanna fulfill all of the math requirements and you feel like the work load is too stressful, consider another field.
