Electric engineering questions.

Questions about Engineering?

  • Hi. I have some questions about engineering. First, do you think now is the to become an engineer? Like will they still have jobs in the next 8-10 years? I am a high school student and I want to go into engineering. Also, I'm not sure what type of engineering I should go into. Most of them sound the same to me. I was thinking civil engineering but I didn't know if civil engineered worked for firms or only the government Which engineers work for like firms and help design new buildings? Which engineers work for large construction companies? Is it worth getting a masters in engineering or a BS good enough? (Does a masters make a big difference in pay in other words) Thanks for your help and feel free to add any more details!

  • Answer:

1] THere is never a bad time to get an engineering degree; even though engineering is cyclic, other jobs are as well. Besides, engineering pays well; with only a BS you are a professional. 2] Engineering is indeed cyclic; when the economy is bad jobs are hard to find, but once the economy recovers companies will pound on your door to beg you to come work for them [well, I exaggerate a little]. 3] Civil engineering is a term dating from when the other variety was military engineering [designing forts etc]. They are not all civil; some are quite rude.... However, building design is part of Civil engg. 4] A MS never hurts, but if the economy is doing well when you get your BS, I'd skip it. If the economy is hurting, then stay in school for the MS.

"Engineering is the discipline, art and profession of acquiring and applying technical, scientific, and mathematical knowledge to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention." I'm pretty dang sure that Engineers will always have jobs until we have nothing left in the world to create, or if robots think of things for us. Silly! Of course, your education would have to be upgraded with the times, but even if it wasn't there are probably an infinite number of things to create even at one time period. Ever hear of Steampunk?
