A very annoying question about chemical engineering and petroleum engineering?

Aerospace Engineering vs Petroleum Engineering?

  • Hi, I got accepted both to Purdue (for aero) and texas a&m (petro) . I have been interested in both for a long time. My only question is, which one will have a higher chance of getting a job? I want to specialize in drilling for petro (lots of traveling and highest pay) , what's the job outlook for petroleum engineering? My parents are saying to go to Pet because Aero is apparently "going away" in the US .

  • Answer:

Look on job websites such as www.dice.com I don't think aerospace is going to go away; if only because our Air Force will need planes. However, the NLRB in its screwing of Boeing over their South Carolina plant is NOT helping. Note however that engineering is cyclic, and salaries vary both with the economy and with the supply/demand balance in the particular discipline. Per the novelist Tony Hillerman "Go into something you love, or else you are just working to buy yourself out of slavery". I am a chemical engineer, and I loved engineering, but found that I hated the lying pointy-haired weasels for whom I worked. THeir parents were brothers.
