Wanting to be an engineer...what classes to take in high school?
-
I don't know exactly what type of engineer I want to be but I think I'll probably be wanting to to make green/environmentally friendly products. This year I'm a junior and I'm taking Honors Physics and AP Calc AB. Next year I'm planning on taking AP Physics C and AP Calc BC but would it be beneficial to take any other science or math classes? At school I could also take AP Statistics, AP Bio, AP Chem, or possibly computer science.

Answer:
If you want chemical engineering, look to take a year of chemistry in HS, take math every year, especially calculus or pre-calculus. Take the most difficult physics. Mechanical engineering and civil are pretty much the same, except maybe a geology and a computer or programming course, if offered. I don't see any real need of statistics. Engineering is more into a basics of math and basic sciences. So you can't go wrong with taking the most difficult math and physics courses available. For environmental engineering you do probably need biology and chemistry for sure Read this link, has a lot of good stuff: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos027.htm

At the completion of AP classes, look into local community colleges for classes that might meet your general ed requirements for college. Congrats!
