ESTIMATE WATER USAGE. Help PLEASE!?
-
An average family of four uses roughly 1200 liters (about 300 gallons) of water per day. (One liter = 1000 cm3.) How much depth would a lake lose per year if it uniformly covered an area of 90 square kilometers and supplied a local town with a population of 40000 people? Consider only population uses, and neglect evaporation and so on. I'd do really appreciate any help for this problem!

Answer:
Calc the total volume of water used in a year: V = 1200 (1000 liters/cm3) / [(100 cm/m) (100 cm/m) (100 cm/m)] (40000) (365 days) = () meters cubed Now divide that by the area of the lake to get depth A = 90 (1000) (1000) = () meters squared Depth = V / A meters

You need more information on the lake for an accurate answer. The area says nothing about the volume. Consider the possibility that the whole lake is only 6" deep. More likely, it will be very shallow in some areas and deeper in others.
