What happens if I do poorly on a civil service test?

How can i test a capacitor bank?

  • how can i test a capacitor bank in a panel that is already working in a factory , but it have a short circuit and i don't really know what happens but all the components looks good except the main circuit breaker and i've replaced it and i want to make sure that all the components is ok before i put it in service again specially the capacitors and the discharging resistors .

  • Answer:

Just measure capacitors with an ohmmeter with the discharge resistors disconnected. They should read a low resistance at first and then increase as they charge to a high reading. Then check the discharge resistors to see that they read the correct resistance values. It is not perfect because the ohmmeter will not put a high voltage on the components. You might have faults that are only apparent at high voltage. If you have a short in the bank, the whole bank will discharge into that short. It may be fairly spectacular if there is enough stored energy.

Not possible, as the voltage from a lightning bolt is measured in the millions of volts, and capacitors with that voltage rating are not available. Series connection of caps won't work here, as leakages to the air will cause the very high voltage to arc over to ground. .
