How much is electricity?

How much electricity an air conditioner uses in a month?

  • I need to know in 30 days or so how much electricity an air conditioner uses. The Kill A Watt Electricity Load Meter and Monitor would work but in case of power outage it shuts off. I need something that runs 24/7 without any interruption, some kind of meter battery operated in case of power outage or unplug. Let me explain it better, I share my electric bill with my roommate and don't use air conditioner and he does, I want to find out how much electricity his AC uses during the month. If anyone has any idea I will really appreciated.

  • Answer:

Any external device can be defeated by using an extension cord to get the power from a different socket. If you seriously want to measure the useage, you would have to install an elapsed time meter inside the AC unit. Otherwise, I would just use an estimate and leave it at that. The Kill a Watt can be used to establish an approximate value.

The best way is installed a watt meter in series with the AC. The watt meter is the same type as the electricity meter use at home for every house. This watt meter runs as AC is turned ON and it records down the usage in scale. Power OFF shall not affect its reading. Running AC all day long is quite expensive, $3 to $4 per day depending on the BTU and setting and outside temperature.

I will be guessing about the kilowatts, but I had this problem last year. I told folks that I was not the mommy, and if they wanted to use airconditioners they would have to pay the difference in electric costs, and they said "oh, sure, yeah" etc. My bill compares "latest 12 mo." versus "prior 12 mo." these are bar charts. My reading isn't exact. It looks like 200kwh without airconditioners, and, up and down; 580 to 1000 kwh with 2x (two) bedroom airconditioners running. I told them it cost an extra $100. They didn't pay. Maybe they had old machines that are inefficient. Maybe they also left lights on all the time. Based on my experience, you could guess it will be an extra $50. Just a guess, you can correct it later. Nils K. Hammer
