Stick with the major brands - Minelab (my favorite), Whites, Fisher, Bounty Hunter, Tesoro, and possibly others I don't remember at the moment. The next step is to determine how much to spend. The best all around detector, in my opinion, is either the Minelab Explorer SE Pro or the E-Trak. ($1000-$1500 US) In general, if you stick with the above manufacturers and are willing to spend $300-500 US, you can probably find a good detector to learn with. BUT the next thing you MUST do is find some folks nearby who can teach you how to use your detector and where to look for great finds. Search for metal detecting and treasure hunting clubs near you. If you are in the US, look for the magazines "Lost Treasure" and Eastern and Western Treasures". Visit these websites: http://www.minelabowners.com/forum/portal.php http://www.losttreasureusa.com/ (Sign up to win a free detector.) www.kellycodetectors.com Then start educating yourself. There's a lot to learn but it's great fun and a great way to learn about local and national history.
