Which type of engineering science relates the most to economic development?

  • I am a highschool senior looking for various colleges and what academic courses they offer. Then I got confused by engineering sciences. I want to become a member of global organization and work on economic development of countries in need. And I heard that to do so it is better to do major in and learn more sciences and math in undergraduate. So I was then looking at the list of subjects in school of engineering and applied sciences, and I got very confused by which one would most be relevant and useful to what I want to do in the future. So here are the types of engineering sciences. Bioinformatics Biomedical Engineering Chemical Engineering Computer Engineering Computer Science Electrical Engineering Environmental Engineering Mechanical Engineering Systems Science & Engineering Right now I'm thinking that mechanical engineering is overall the most relevant to what I want to do in the future. What do you think? Is there any other type of scientific subject that I must consider? It would be great if you could help me thank you!

If you want to work on creating basic infrastructure, then mechanical, civil, or structural engineering are all good fields. I'm sure they can use help developing roads, bridges and basic factories. If you want to work on the business-oriented economics, study economics.

It's not on your list, but industrial engineering pertains a lot to the business aspect of engineering. It could be somewhat economics related.

For your undergrad, your geography department may have some classes that concentrate on urban studies topics. Public history - especially historic preservation - often will help. For your masters (in this field, you'll have to have one), you definitely want to go with a degree program in Planning.
