What is the difference between an architect and a drafter?

The difference between an architect & engineer?

  • i'm not a native speaker so excuse me if u found any mistakes . i heard an architect saying that architecture has nothing to do with engineering and they are very different, and an architect is like a father for all the majors of engineering, he's like a father for an Electrical Engineer and so on. but what i understood all my life is that engineering is a field includes Mechanical engineering, Chemical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architecture and so . and i believe that even if they are not exactly the same they are strongly related to each other . and an architect studies Architecture and some of other engineering majors as Electrical Engineering. in my language we call an architect translated to English (Architectural engineer) "not sure if that's the right translation, but the important is the idea" and that what he was angry about and as i wrote before he says that architecture doesn't belong to engineering . what can i say to him? what does a person study to become an architect ? and 1 more thing ( what is the exact definition of an architect ?)

  • Answer:

I have been in the structural engineering profession for over 30 years and every, I mean EVERY architect I have ever worked with or known on a professional basis are condescending, arrogant and annoying at times. They are taught in school that the architect is the prime mover on all projects for which they are responsible. In his opinion all the engineering disciplines, civil, structual, mechanical, etc. have to dance to his tune. They get the lion's share of the overall design fee whereas the engineers get a paltry fee. Despite your engineering expertise, they always feel they know better than you. I know this is quite a jaded view, but many of my structural engineering peers feel the same way. Some are more amenable than others, but by in large, they have a sense of superiority that is inculcated by the AIA, their peers, their supervisors, and the school they attended.
