1) Check this one out http://www.amazon.com/MATLAB-Introduction-Applications-Amos-Gilat/dp/0471694207 2) Download Matlab obviously http://www.mathworks.com/ usually the school should have it along with a free licence for student use 3) Matlab makes solving linear algebra simple. Makes systems of equations a breeze. Thats what it was designed for. It is also good for basic programming and mathematical calculations

MATLAB is a great program, but I like to think of it as the "back of the envelop" of simulation software. It's easy to use and will get you a down and dirty answer quickly. But, if you want to do anything serious, you're better off using/writing specialized code in C/FORTRAN. However, it is still worth learning and, luckily, the online tutorials are fantastic. Most of them can be found here: http://www.mathworks.com/academia/student_center/tutorials/launchpad.html Honestly, I wouldn't bother buying any books, because the online resources are so good. I believe you need to purchase MATLAB (expensive), but your university should have copies for you to use.

http://www.mathworks.com/videos/matlab/getting-started-with-matlab.html Matlab is a great tool but there is some skill involved in using it. It helps a lot if you have written any kind of programs to solve math problems already, be it in a scripting language (perl, python, lisp) or a regular compiled programming language (java, c++). Once you get the hang of Matlab you can really do great things. Taking it a little further Mathworks offers the Simulink product where you model physical systems and then "run" them. Design an oscillator circuit, simulate it and plot the results. Change the circuit and repeat. The advantage to learning it is that with it you can produce professional results. It's like learning Word and producing a great document - try producing the document by hand! Knowing Matlab is a professional skill that increases your value in the engineering market. Go for it!

1. There are plenty of matlab manuals (like this one http://www.mathworks.com/moler/index_ncm.html) however, all you really need to be able to do is use matlab's built in help functions to find things like integrals and to plot graphs using matlab. It is also extremely helpful to have some sort of background in programming, otherwise you definitely need to do some studying from a textbook. 2. just matlab. you can buy a student copy here https://www.mathworks.com/accesslogin/login.do?uri=http://www.mathworks.com/downloads/web_downloads/agent_check%3Fmode%3Dgwylf. But the newest copy of matlab can also be torrented if you're into that 3. You can write your own functions that can help you with things that would take forever to do by hand. There are also numerous built in functions that will solve integrals numerically or symbolically, plot graphs, solve systems of equations and many other useful features. There are also thousands of matlab plugins that can be used for any task you could want so that you don't often even need to write your own functions.
