How to improve my oral speaking in English?

  • About two years ago, I immigrated from China to NYC, and start to study English. Although I can understand most part of what guys are talking about in English, my oral speaking is really really "terrible". I have to manage my word in my brain for a while before I say them out. Also, I have strong accent which sometimes makes Americans think I am speaking Chinese even if I am using English. I can not pronounce some words correctly, which are easy to be heard as other words, so many times they don't get my meaning and I have to repeat again slowly. It is hard for me to amend it now because I didn't mind it in the beginning and let it just go worse. So, now, please help me how to get a more perfect speaking language? Thanks

    Watch part of a movie, news, something spoken, and tape it. Then tape yourself repeating what the person said, repeat it over and over. Also practice speaking s l o w e r. Speaking a foreign language is the LAST thing we learn to do. We can understand what we read, and what people say, but using the new grammar rules in speech is the hardest thing to learn. Be patient, and continue to practice, we all have experienced this temporary problem.
