Is the Midwestern American English accent unique?

Is it possible to gain lose an American accent and speak with a foreign accent in English?

  • I've been wondering if this is truly possible. For instance, say that I'm 18 now (with an American accent in English), I go to France when I'm 21, and live there my whole life, would I eventually pickup a French accent when I speak English? (This being that I'll speak French fluently and daily overtime)

  • Answer:

not necessarily unless you make an intention to lose the american accent and take on a french accent

You can do whatever you want, speak however you want -- although it helps to have a good ear and a talent for languages. Meryl Streep does this all the time and has won several Academy Awards for her efforts.

MANY MANY guys do this without actually knowing a foreign language or moving anywhere. The purpose is simple: Many guys and girls love a foreign accent.

You may, it depends on how thouroughly you integrate in your surroundings. I've lived in Spain for 30 years and though I don't have a "Spanish accent" I have acquired a slight lisp because people all around me lisp their soft c's and z's. If you set about trying to, you can. Actors do it all the time. Look at David Suchet as Poirot. He not only speaks with a French/Belgian accent, his voice is considerably higher and softer when he plays Poirot. When he is speaking in his own voice it's much lower, and definitely British.
