English question: Go snowboarding vs. do some snowboarding?

  • I understand that we use "go" with -ing activities such as snowboarding, scuba diving, ice skating, sightseeing, but why do we say "do some snowboarding / scuba diving / etc". "Do a little sightseeing / do some snowboarding / do a lot of scuba diving..." and so on. I would really appreciate a grammatical explanation. Thank you in advance. I am reading an English grammar book which explains how to use do/play/go for sports and other activities and the rules governing which usage is correct. So saying "This weekend, I will do snowboarding," is incorrect. Doesn't that sound strange? Yet, there is no explanation in the book as to why we say "I will do some snowboarding." Can someone please explain with a grammatical explanation?
