How to improve my musical ability?

Does playing musical instruments improve language learning ability?

  • I've heard people say this before and and wondering if it's true. I'm learning Spanish at the moment and would love to learn many languages in the future :). I also play saxophone, drums and trumpet, (and i'm learning oboe). I was wondering if my musical ability might help me learn languages in the long-term. I'd appreciate any responses. Gracias!

    Yes it does. To learn languages, you use a different part of your brain in a difficult manner. So instruments will help because both languages and instruments require memory and other stuff like that.

According to some studies, individuals who study/practice/play music do very well if they choose to study a foreign language. Their brains have been duly exercised, and are now "programmed" or 'high-wired for learning other things.

I started playing violin and cello when I was 10 years old. I was a quick learner and I think this was due to the fact that I picked up on patterns easily. With playing an instrument there is also a sensitivity to sound that your ear develops. I think learning languages becomes easier if one plays an instrument because there are always patterns, and they are easier to pick up if the brain already recognizes patterns and how to learn them. As for the sounds, the ear tunes to them very well and everything becomes like a song. That's what I think :)

Research has shown that it does. However, not all music improve learning. Music without lyrics improves learning better than those that has lyrics. Why? It is because your brain would unconsciously register the lyrics.
