Why do I have to take Latin at school?

Should I take Latin or Spanish in High School?

  • Right now I'm scheduling my classes for high school. Three years of language are mandatory for my honors diploma, and there's only two language classes available at my school (latin and spanish). I'm not really passionate about either of them and they both have their own pros & cons. Spanish: I can't roll my tongue, but it will be more useful in life after high school & college (very popular). Most of my friends are taking spanish, but I'm not really going to let that decide which language I'm going to take. Latin: I've heard it can help with your SAT's (which I'm hoping to get a really good score on so that I can go to a good college, get scholarships, etc), but it's referred to as 'the dead language' because it's not really used anymore (other than for doctors). However, I don't really plan on a job in the medical field.... but you never know. I'm not going to be starting until my sophomore year, but I'm just trying to map out my high school years. Thanks for the input(:

  • Answer:

After four years of high school Latin I can safely say...take Spanish. Latin did not help me on my SATs period, studying vocab flashcards for a few hours would have done significantly more than several years of Latin. I'm a Senior and in AP Latin right now and honestly its miserable. I'm not one of those kids who hates school either...I actually enjoy most of my subjects. But take Spanish, even if you don't like it either at least you know you can actually use it some day.

I would encourage you to take Spanish! I took 7 years of Spanish highschool and college. I have had the opportunity to use it at my work and in my private life. I loved the language and the cultural studies that come along with it, but I am biased since I never took Latin. I think that learning any foreign language is awesome and worthwhile though!

I say spanish, because spanish is spoken in all countries in latin america except brazil, they speak portugues. And one main reason is that latin is a dead language while spanish is a on going evolving language.
